Judging the Awards
All categories, with the exception of the Person of the Decade in Communications, are awarded based on the decision of an independent panel of judges. They determine their decision purely on the basis of the submission from the entrant or nominee.

Person of the Decade in Communications is awarded to the individual who receives the most votes via an online poll hosted by Total Telecom Online. The shortlist is determined by the editorial teams of Total Telecom.
Judging Process
Entries are open from April 2008 until Friday, 20th June 2008.

All nominations for each category will be forwarded to the judging panel for them to review.
Selections for the highly commended and the short list for each category, will be made from what the entries portray in their entry submissions.

If the judges require more information from entrants they will, via Total Telecom, contact the them.

At the Awards Dinner the judges' rationale for selecting the winner will be announced and each winner will receive an engraved award from Total Telecom.

Chairman:
David Molony
Principal Analyst, IP Enterprise Practice
Ovum

David Molony researches and reports on global managed services providers and multinational corporate users, focusing on convergence of voice, data, mobile and IT networks and services. David has more than 20 years’ experience in telecoms business journalism. He was formerly editor in chief of Total Telecom and editor of industry newspaper CommunicationsWeek International.

David was awarded the title International Business Editor of the Year by the Association of Online Publishers in 2003. He has chaired and presented at conferences in Brussels, London, New York and Tokyo. David spent 12 years with international financial news agency Reuters and worked at Kagan World Media as a European media industry analyst. He holds a BA (Hons.) degree in History from the University of Kent at Canterbury, England.

Michael Bartholomew

European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association (ETNO)

Michael Bartholomew was appointed director of the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association (ETNO) in July 2000 and re-appointed in May 2003. ETNO is the main trade association for Europe’s 41 largest e-communications operators located in 34 countries. Mr. Bartholomew, based in the Belgian capital for the past 20 years, is a public affairs specialist in telecommunications, audiovisual, multimedia, trade and technology issues. As director of ETNO, he is responsible for running the Brussels-based secretariat. He oversees all working groups and develops public policy for Europe’s largest telecom companies at the highest levels of government across the European Union and worldwide.

Prior to joining ETNO, Mr. Bartholomew served as Director for European Affairs for the Motion Picture Association that represents the global interests of Hollywood’s major studios. A British citizen, Mr. Bartholomew also founded a Brussels public affairs consultancy, which he managed successfully for nine years. With a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Illinois, he began his career as a journalist and has worked for the Associated Press, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and his columns on European affairs have been published in leading international newspapers. 

Sean Collins

Sean Collins is Chairman of KPMG’s Global Telecommunications and Media Practice. Sean has a MA in Classics, Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  Sean became a partner in 1985, when he commenced a four year secondment to the Kuala Lumpur office of KPMG.  Back in London office in 1989, Sean developed an increasing specialisation in telecommunications.  He has led a number of major assignments for major European telecoms companies, in such areas as financial management consulting, mergers and acquisitions, bid defence,  acquisitions and disposals, many flotations, profit and cash forecasts and new investments, both in the UK and internationally. 

His work in telecommunications has involved work in over 20 countries and he is responsible for the global position of KPMG’s accounting, audit, tax, advisory and lead services to the telecommunications and media industries.

Kenneth Cukier
Japan Business Correspondent
The Economist

Kenneth Cukier is the Japan business correspondent of The Economist. He also covers technology, and was previously the newspaper’s IT and telecoms writer in London. Earlier, he was the Technology Editor of The Wall Street Journal Asia in Hong Kong, the European Editor of Red Herring magazine, a senior editor at CommunicationsWeek International (the precursor to Totaltele.com), and worked at The International Herald Tribune in Paris.

From 2002 to 2004, Mr Cukier was a research fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he worked on the internet and international relations. Additionally, Mr Cukier is on the board of advisors to the Daniel Pearl Foundation and is a term-member of the Council on Foreign Relations. 

John Hibbard

John has worked in the telecommunications industry for over 40 years, and for more than 30 has been associated with submarine cables. An Engineer by qualification, John worked for much of his career at Telstra with his final 7 years as Managing Director of Global Wholesale. John was the inaugural Chairman of Australia Japan Cable which he guided to a successful implementation.

Since 2001, John has been an independent consultant in his own company, Hibbard Consulting, involved in strategic and commercial aspects associated with the development and implementation of international telecom projects such as the recovery and re-lay of A-PNG2 cable. John is currently Senior Vice-President on the Board of Governors of PTC.

Audrey Mandela

Audrey Mandela is an independent consultant, working on strategy, market analysis, and competitor analysis projects with a wide variety of industry players and investors.

Audrey was formerly Senior Vice President, International, for the Yankee Group, where she was responsible for managing all of the Yankee Group's research and sales activities in Europe, Latin America and Asia. Audrey’s areas of expertise include global networking, carrier strategies and alliances, international communications regulation, managed network services, and electronic commerce. She is the author of many studies on these subjects, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences around the world.  Ms Mandela holds a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts.Audrey is also co-founder and former board director of Multimap.com, Europe’s leading on-line mapping services company. Multimap was sold to Microsoft in December 2007.

 
Manoj Menon

Manoj Menon directly manages Frost & Sullivan’s business in Asia Pacific.

Manoj started at Frost & Sullivan in December 1996 as one of the pioneers when the company was just beginning its trajectory into Asia. He has, since then, successfully grown the company’s presence and business in Asia Pacific by manifold.  Manoj continues to drive Frost & Sullivan’s expansion in the region, yielding the highest year-on-year growth to the group’s global business.

Throughout his tenure at Frost & Sullivan, Manoj has consulted on multiple strategic and syndicated projects for leading multinational companies, regulators and government bodies, providing growth workshops and client counsels, among others.  He is today one of the region’s most sought-after speakers and thought leaders, wherein his expert opinions have been heard at seminars and industry conferences globally. Manoj is also frequently featured in leading media, namely CNN, Bloomberg, Channel News Asia, CNBC, BBC, Singapore Business Times and Straits Times, and Malaysian Business.

He earned his Bachelor of Engineering at Mumbai University, and MBA at the ICFAI Business School in India. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Anne Morris

Anne Morris is editor of Total Telecom, the world’s only integrated print and online information service for the telecoms industry. She moved from the position of editor, online, to take over editorship of the magazine from David Molony in February this year. Total Telecom Magazine reports extensively on telecoms managed services for corporate users, especially broadband access and services, operator strategies, and the changing business relationships of network operators, systems integrators and equipment vendors, as they shift into service provision in the competitive marketplace.

Anne previously worked as production editor on Total Telecom's predecessor CommunicationsWeek International, which she joined in 1996. Prior to joining CWI she worked as a business translator and editor at Reuters for seven years.

Annette Nabavi is a specialist in strategic partnerships, business planning and financing strategy and runs an independent advisory business working with clients on business and financial strategy.  Annette also works closely with AHV Associates, a corporate finance advisory boutique, on M&A and capital raising projects for technology and telecommunications companies.

Annette has held a number of senior management positions in investment banking, in consultancy and in general management, principally in the telecoms and IT industries.  At ING Barings Annette was the Global Head of Business Development in Telecommunications Corporate Finance with responsibilities across both Europe and Asia Pacific.  At the PA Consulting Group she was a Senior Partner focussing on strategy and business planning for telecommunications and technology clients.

Annette was a founding director of XchangePoint Holdings Ltd, the first commercial Internet Exchange in the UK.  XchangePoint was sold to PacketExchange in 2004.  .
Annette holds an MA from Oxford University and a Doctorate from the University of Dijon.

Anil Prakash

Anil Prakash Graduated in Economics, a Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing & Management. He is been a specialist in government relations, regulatory and policy framework, and supporting business development in India. Having 29 years of domestic and international techno-commercial experience in telecom IT and entertainment industry, he intermingle with ease with the highest policy, regulatory authorities and  with the captains of the  Industry at the same time.

He helped to establish PTC India Foundation a country chapter of Pacific Telecommunications Council www.ptc.org  in India in 1994, Telecom Users Group of India in 1997 a country Association of INTUG www.intug.org , ITU-APT Foundation of India in 2003, a country Association of ITU in India www.itu.int  and IPTV India Forum in 2006. He is an active member of regional and international telecom forums and trade bodies. He has been represented, participated and speaker of various telecom conferences and events since 1990.

He is currently a Chairman and Founder of India Resource Center a consulting company comprises experts from various disciplines from IT, Telecom and Entertainment. He is also a President of Telecom Users Group of India www.tugindia.org , Secretary General, ITU-APT Foundation of India www.itu-apt.org and a Secretary General, IPTV India Forum www.iptvforum.org.in.
Marlène Sellebråten

Marlène Sellebråten is the editor of Telekom Online, the leading daily trade newsletter completely dedicated to covering the Swedish and Nordic telecommunications industry. In her role as editor, she reports on issues related to competition and regulation in Sweden as well as business issues in the Nordic region. She also moderates a network of telecom professionals in Sweden and moderates seminars on burning industry issues.

Marlène has ten years’ experience researching and reporting on the telecommunications industry, as an analyst, editor and consultant. Marlène started as an associate analyst at Gartner in the UK in 1999, covering European the telephony and data network services industry. After a short period at a dot.com consultancy, she then joined Communications Week International as senior editor. There she focused in particular on global operators.

Leaving the UK for Sweden, Marlène then reported on the Nordic telecoms market for a variety of trade magazines including Total Telecom, in her capacity of freelance writer. She also carried out a number of research assignments for Gartner. Over the years, Marlène has also chaired a number of telecom conferences and seminars in Sweden.

Marlène holds a master’s degree in international trade technique and marketing from Picardy university as well as a master’s degree in International economics and business English and German from Montpellier university. She is also a certified Swedish vocational media teacher. Born and raised in France, she has lived in Germany, the UK and Sweden and speaks fluently French, English and Swedish.

Jaap van Till   
Stratix Consulting B.V. and HAN University of Applied Science

Jaap is consultant to CTO’s and corporate telecom managers who has experience in the telecommunication, computer network and Internet-infrastructure fields, and is working at the cutting edge of new disruptive technologies and emerging peer-to-peer community tools, FttX and technology policy. He learned from his projects as a “Network Architect” in the corporate and factory networks of Akzo Nobel all over Europe. Later he helped to design large corporate computer networks for businesses, government ministries and the NL NREN (national research and education network) SURFnet and Netherlight lambda network.

Jaap van Till is senior partner at Statix Consulting,  professor at the HAN University in Arnhem (NL) and director of the Institute for Network Quality (IfNQ). He was professor at the Delft University (NL) and the University of Kaunas (Lithuania) and frequently teaches at post-graduate courses and business schools, like the Institut Theseus in Nice (France).

 
Ed Vonk

EVUA (the Enterprise Virtual Network User Association)

Ed graduated from the The Hague University with a bachelor degree in Radio Communications, The Haarlem University with a bachelor degree in Computer Engineering and from the Amsterdam University with a bachelor degree in Business Management. He joints the Dutch Civil Aviation Authorities in 1970 where he was made responsible for Instrument Landing systems and navigation aids flight-testing. He left this service in 1980 for a carrier with the former Dutch public carrier, now KPN. After 5 years working he left for a more exiting job as telecommunications advisor/project leader for the Royal Dutch Shell group. Although stationed at The Hague he worked on various projects amongst others in Libya, Morocco, Egypt, Gabon, Bangladesh, Nepal, Syria, Columbia and Norway. He retired from Shell after 20 years of service in April 2004 and stated his own company in Telecom Consultancy.

Ed is now 10 years active within the European Virtual Network User Association (EVUA). He was former board member and chairman. After retirement from Shell he was asked to lead the organisation and to become their CEO. His main activities are focusing on commercial aspect, development of Enterprise Network Services and relation with suppliers and other user groups.

Ed interest in the telecommunications market ranges from better service definitions for nuts and bolt services toward complete outsourcing of Enterprise Infrastructure Services. Although critical towards what the market can deliver on a global scale, Ed’s vision remains that outsourcing holds the future and that multinationals will look towards service providers that can deliver enterprise infrastructure services in a competitive and open market. 

 
Janet Watkin

Janet Watkin, is a Director and founder of Telemark Services Ltd. She successfully developed and launched the Telemark OCEAN (Outstanding Customer Experience Analysis & News) programme for evaluating user perceptions of service providers.  An expert in setting up and running customer satisfaction and loyalty programmes, especially with regard to international IPVPN and related data offerings Janet looks to find root cause for dissatisfaction and offers consultancy to clients on achieving world class standards of service aligned with customer priorities.

Today, the Telemark Gold benchmark has become the de facto industry standard for user perception measurement and competitive comparisons in the global data VPN market. Other research projects led by Janet include: Assessment of staff opinion on internal processes from ‘bid to bill’ for major carrier; Estimation of Mean Time to Deliver for VPNs; Evaluation of customer opinion on network platform upgrade to NGEN; Service excellence assessment for major global carrier; Review of SLA (Service Levels Agreement) requirements by enterprise users.
